Diablo II: The Abyss

Diablo II: The Abyss is a mod I made for Diablo II: Lord of Destruction. When Diablo II came out in 2000, I was already a fan of the first game and was instantly hooked. Time and again, I come back to Diablo II. It’s one of those games you get a spontaneous urge to play a couple times a year. Now in 2010, its time for another D2 binge. This time, whenever I find myself thinking “Damn, it’d be cool if [cool idea] was in D2,” I add it. So far, this has taken the form of 50+ new runewords, several new skills, additional sockets in some items, and much more.

The latest version of the mod is 1.2.0.1.

If you prefer not to use setup, you can download the mpq and launcher files manually here. All of them go in the same directory as patch_d2.mpq. This may be an easier way to install the mod if you run Diablo II under Linux via Wine.

Installation

1. Backup your original patch_d2.mpq and your character files (the Save folder in the game directory) just in case! Windows Vista/7 users: If you installed Diablo 2 in a non-public folder (i.e. Program Files) some of the files, especially the Save folder, will be found in %APPDATA%\Diablo II.
2. Run d2a_setup.exe
3. Run the game using the launcher setup placed in the Start Menu\Diablo II.

The Horadric Cube

Horadric CubeAs stated on The Arreat Summit:

The Horadric Cube is a quest item obtained in Act II which can be used to complete several quests. In addition to that task, it can be also used as a permanent backpack to store additional items and create new ones.

Place the Horadric Cube in your inventory. Notice it only takes up 2×2 slots.

Place items into the Horadric Cube by picking them up, dragging them over the Horadric Cube, and left click on the Horadric Cube. You will hear a sound when the item is placed into the Cube. You can also pick the Horadric Cube, drag it over a large item you want to pick up, and left click on that item to place it into the Cube. You can also open up the Cube by right clicking on it like a Tome. Drag items from your inventory into the Cube.

Items will be Identified by Cain while inside the Horadric Cube.

You cannot place a Horadric Cube within a Horadric Cube, imagine that…

…You can use the Horadric Cube’s magical powers to Transmute items into a new item. Place the items into the Cube and hit the Transmute Button.

The Horadric Cube can be used to create Crafted Items.

Transmuting Formulae

“Simply place the items in the first half of the equation into the Cube and hit the Transmute Button to produce the item in the second half of the equation.”

  1. Just checking in since I haven’t touched this in awhile.

For the info above, keep in mind f[##] refers to one of the new runes of whatever the number is (so f01 would be Fehu, the first rune in the new set.) The sacred herb is bought from potion NPCs.

The only bug I’ve noticed when using the mod in 1.12 is the button to respec skills uses the wrong string. However respecing is not in the spirit of Diablo 2 and Blizz should be ashamed for such a hackneyed act of blasphemy, so I’m not going to worry about it. I suggest using version 1.11b of the game if possible.

A great deal of information about things that were added can be found in the changelog, and, of course, I’ll answer any questions posted in these here comments.
